Featured Exhibitor: Tisdel Woodworks

Paul Tisdel is the owner and maker behind Tisdel Woodworks, and his reclaimed barn wood designs are as eco-friendly as they are beautiful. Paul is involved in the process every step of the way, from hand selecting the materials to putting on the practical finishing touches. Wood signs are so classic, and what better way to decorate than with an authentic, handcrafted piece?

Who are you and what do you do?

I am a father of four with my beautiful wife, Kelly. She is the one that makes sacrifices for me to do what I love to do. Right now, Tisdel Woodworks isn't my full-time job but I am working hard to make it so.

How did you get started in your business?

Tisdel Woodworks is primarily a one man show. I do have some very tough and hardworking friends that help with the dismantling of the barns that I use to make my products. However, I am the one that handles the wood from dismantling the barn all the way to the final hooks on the back of my signs.

What are some inspirations for your work?

I use reclaimed wood from any old building that has seen better days and turn it into works of art. Everything from state wall art to custom signs and furniture. I love working with the old growth wood that you can't just buy in stores any more.

Have you always been passionate about art and design?

I found my passion for working with barn wood when I took some old boards from a fence that was getting taken down and turned it into our dining room table. I love the look and the history of the wood that was used in all the old structures.

What’s your favorite item that you sell?

Custom pieces are my favorite! I love taking someone's idea and being able to turn it into their dream piece. I like the whole design process. From that idea that pops into your head to getting it on paper (more computer these days) and bringing it to life.

Featured Exhibitor: Creative Jewelry by Marcia

These lovely adornments are made by local artist Marcia Newquist, the owner and maker behind Creative Jewelry by Marcia. She designs each piece using a variety of mediums, intertwining metal, clay and beadwork to create stunning statement jewelry. Marcia's passion for her work leads her to try new methods and designs, and we love the end results!

Who are you and what do you do?

My name is Marcia Newquist. I ventured into the world of making jewelry in 2006 and did my first Art Fair in 2008. In 2010, I made my business ‘Creative Jewelry by Marcia’ official as a way to expand my love of making jewelry. It is now my full-time business, since retiring from being a Programmer/Analyst in 2013. Many of my pendants and special pieces are designed and created using sheets of brass, copper and stainless steel; earthen clay, crystal clay; pieces of antique/vintage jewelry in combination with components, crystals and beads; wire wrapping stones; soldering with stained glass or on metal for designs.

What was your first memory of making something?

I laugh when I think of the first piece of jewelry I made. In the fall of 2006 I had surgery and was laid up for ten weeks. Every Sunday, my husband would take me to Ben Franklin so I could shop and just get out of the house. I saw some beads there and thought it would be fun to try and make some jewelry. My first piece of jewelry was an oblong brown bead that I put on a chain, I was so proud of that necklace.

What do your customers love most about your product(s)?

Customers tell me they like my jewelry because it is different from other jewelers. The other comment I get most often is; they like it because it is very unique. They also like the quality of my jewelry and that I stand behind it, if something does happen to break.

What do you think sets your designs apart from others?

I work a lot with brass, copper and silver metals combining them. When working with the metals I cut, sand, texture, emboss for imprinting metals, heat emboss or patina for color, rivet, layer and/or solder the pieces. I love making asymmetrical necklaces. Each year I try to incorporate a new method into my jewelry collection.

What motivates you to create?

My motivation comes from within. I have always liked creating things and making jewelry allows me to do that using many different mediums. My favorite medium when designing and creating jewelry is working with metals. It is very therapeutic and relaxing for me to work in my bead studio. I can work on a piece for an entire day and not get frustrated if it doesn’t turn out because I just love doing it.

What has been your favorite moment since creating your business?

One of my favorite moments was remodeling my bead studio. I painted it a deep orange and found a rug that had big flowers that also has orange in the rug. My sister gave me two old smaller dressers that I use for some storage. I found an old wooden table for sale that I use for a work space and keep all my tools on so they are close by. I have an old wooden rocker, for my guest to sit in. It is special, because it is the first piece of furniture I purchased. All my wall hangings have a special meaning behind each piece. I love spending time in my bead studio surrounded by memories while making special pieces of jewelry for others.

Featured Exhibitor: Advantage Glass Designs

Wayne and Tammy Ebert are the creators behind Advantage Glass Designs. After trying the art form on a whim, they discovered their passion for fused glass. The attention to detail in their work brings something special to each piece, while colors and textures fuse to make an elegant and unique finished product.

What’s the latest thing you’ve been working on?

Wayne and I love the outdoors. We decided we want to come up with a series of designs that signifies Water, Fire, Air and Earth. Water & fire have been completed and we are on to the next two.

Will you be featuring any special holiday items?

Every year we have fun coming up with new and different collector Christmas ornaments along with serving pieces that are perfect for holidays.

What do your customers love most about your products?

Our customers tell us that they love what we do because we come up with designs that no one else has and we only provide quality work.

How did you get started in your business?

We had a date night that consisted of using a coupon that we purchased to an introductory fused glass class where we could bring a bottle of wine. Once there we both enjoyed working with the medium that we took more classes and here we are.

What do you think sets your designs apart from others?

Wayne and I work very hard to come up with pieces that you don’t see anywhere else. We won’t sell a piece that does not live up to what our standard of quality is. Each and every piece is unique – you will never find two pieces EXACTLY the same.

Check out more of Tammy and Wayne's beautiful work online, and be sure to stop by their booth at the Minneapolis Gift & Art Expo, November 3-5, 2017 at the Minneapolis Convention Center!

With no two pieces exactly alike, her work has even caught the eye of some famous fashion icons...but we'll let Bird Dog Studios' creator tell you herself!

Who are you what do you do?

My name is Lynda Larson and I am the owner/designer of Bird Dog Studios. I handcraft Fashion accessories out of sustainably sourced feathers from around the country.

What is the latest thing you've been working on?

Earlier this year I was asked to design something for Bruno Mars. Talk about excitement! I will be making several WOW factor bowties for the artist and an assortment of hat pins for his extensive collection of fedoras… Pretty cool!

What do you think sets your designs apart from the others?

There is a ton of talent here in Minneapolis that's for sure! I feel that my product is very unique and different from what you usually see. I like to tell a story with my products through a fantastic display.... it all has to go in together and make sense.

What has been your favorite moment since creating your business?

I've had a lot of great moments since the birth of my business. I have met so many wonderful people that I wouldn't have otherwise. I would have to say my most unforgettable moment would be Stevie Nicks receiving the choker I made for her. She has been an inspiration to me since I was very young and I continue to be a huge fan!

Where did your business name come from? Is there an interesting story behind it?

Between my fiancé and me we have three bird dogs. Doc- A tri-colored English Springer, Hunter- a chocolate lab, and the baby Gunner- another tricolored English springer. They all have a passion to hunt with my fiancé and through that sport they have brought the wildlife and land conservation issue to the forefront. Bird Dog Studios is a supporter of nonprofit conservation groups through product donations. It's a good thing... and I thought it was only appropriate that I name my company Bird Dog Studios!

Featured Exhibitor: Rachel's Photos

Rachel Cain has been capturing images for 20 years, and her experience behind the lens definitely shows in her beautiful photos. Drawing inspiration from rural Minnesota, Rachel's barn images are the perfect touch for rustic home decor. We especially love the simplicity of her compositions, allowing the texture of her subject matter to speak for itself.

Who are you and what do you do?

Rachel Cain, Photographer. I took up photography about 20 years ago.

What do your customers love most about your product(s)?

I find that many people are attracted to old barns. They will often buy several images to make a ‘barn wall’ in their house.

How did you get started in your business?

I was looking for something to do outside of work and was grabbed by photography. After doing it for a while, decided no sense in taking pictures only for me to see and started doing art shows and galleries.

What do you think sets your designs apart from others?

I enjoy most all types of photography and have done work from macro and floral shots to street photography. Over time I have gravitated to doing mostly wildlife shots, landscapes and old barns. The latter has become my trademark specialty; I have a unique way of processing these pictures that I think sets me apart from others.

How does the city you live in influence your work?

I have lived in White Bear Lake for almost 5 years. I have found some amazing spots to photograph here; sunrises, wildlife. There are several sunrise shots on my website.

What are some inspirations for your work?

Driving around looking for barns! There is a certain moment with the right light and sometimes weather conditions when I know I have a great photo! I will often go back to a location several times to take the shot in different light, different seasons, etc.

Check out more of Rachel's beautiful work online, and be sure to stop by her booth at the Minneapolis Gift & Art Expo, November 3-5, 2017 at the Minneapolis Convention Center!
